Rep. John Maher’s (R-40) legislation to provide bonuses to honorably discharged Pennsylvania veterans in recognition of their service in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II was unanimously approved by the House this week.
The bill, known as the United States Merchant Marine World War II Veterans Bonus Act, would give each of the approximately 3,000 Pennsylvania Merchant Marines who have honorable discharges from serving during the war a bonus of $500.
“More than 50 years ago veterans from other branches of the military were given recognition with the same dollar amount for their service during World War II,” said Maher. “This legislation seeks to rectify the oversight and stand as a symbol of our appreciation for the efforts of the Merchant Marines during the war.”
Merchant Marines were responsible for transporting supplies, personnel and equipment to other soldiers during the war. The speed of their ships and the cargo they carried directly affected the ability of America to fight the war effectively.
Maher noted that Dwight D. Eisnenhower, while serving as Supreme Commander for Allied Forces in Europe, observed during the war that, “When victory is finally ours, …[none] will share its credit more deservedly than the Merchant Marine.”
House Bill 2450 now goes to the Senate for consideration.
