Rep. John Maher (R-Upper St. Clair) announces that active military personnel and veterans may be eligible for forgiveness of certain education loans.
The program is open to Pennsylvania servicemen and women who have served our country on active duty between Sept. 11, 2001, and the end of this year. The application deadline is June 30, 2007.
The Armed Forces Loan Forgiveness Program provides up to $2,500 in a one-time loan forgiveness payment. The program was established to recognize the bravery, dedication and loyalty of servicemen and women following the Sept. 11 attacks on our nation.
The program is open to borrowers who have an eligible, non-defaulted loan and meet one of the following criteria:
- Current resident of Pennsylvania.
- Non-resident who left a Pennsylvania school due to a call to active duty.
- Pennsylvania resident who was living in Pennsylvania at the time of enlistment and was in the military continuously through at least Sept. 11, 2001, regardless of current place of residence.
- Non-resident who attended a Pennsylvania-approved institution of post-secondary education, who went directly from this post-secondary enrollment into the Armed Forces of the United States, and was in the military continuously through at least Sept. 11, 2001, regardless of current place of residence.
Eligible loans include PHEAA-guaranteed and/or AES-owned loans serviced by AES, including Stafford, HEAL and KeystoneEXTRA loans that were disbursed on or before September 30, 2003.
Borrowers whose active duty is limited to brief training assignments during that timeframe are not eligible.
Program applications are available at Representative John Maher's local office by calling (412) 831-8080 or online at www.RepMaher.com. If a borrower is overseas, an application signed by the Power of Attorney will be accepted if the supporting documentation is provided.
